Gents' individual batting records

T

he Commander inevitably dominates with the only two tons in GWLCC history (although Nick Hubbocks and Dave Thornicroft fell agonisingly close with 96 each in 1994, interestingly in games in which the captain was crocked), as well as twenty fifties. Fourteen Gents and three guests have achieved the fifty landmark. Masher was the first in May 1989, with 76 against Enterprise, the game lost; Sanjay Patel the seventeenth and most recent with 59 not out against the same oppo in August 1997, the game won. Note how Jim Wright has meticulously reached 50, and no more, on three occasions. In some players cricket brings out the tart, in others the accountant. The final two columns may be interpreted as some kind of Dominance Index. When The Gents started out, it was difficult to imagine a list of match results stretching over two pages, let alone a compilation of fifties.

The paucity of centuries is surprising and to the statistical completist a bit of a pisser. Bignell, Boddington, Hubbocks, Hughes, Mitchell, Seale and Wright all scored fifties while opening, so had the opportunity, yet none went on to the ton. A Scorebook Massacre by old Dave Thornicroft, having a bad numbers day, deprived Nick Hubbocks’s 96 of five runs, but even a subsequent appeal faxed to Lord’s failed to get his score into three figures. Dave’s identical score against the Yorkies was scored by the meticulous Helen Carless with her coloured pens. His true total was never up for debate.                 Masher’s two tons were memorable for different reasons. His 137 not out was achieved in just 83 minutes of bonkerdom on a freezing spring day, in a 1992 run glut against Enterprise (just the 469 runs in 70 overs, including Rich Wilman being driven over the railway line by Ron High, a hit without parallel in Gents’ matches, although Rich himself flicked Charles Arthur onto the railway in 1993 on the top pitch). His 102 against Southampton was a match-turning innings. Both knocks saw 150-plus stands which remain club records. Masher, incidentally, rates his highest innings as his best, which he has every right to do, although London Saints’ 1993 attack was more powerful than the Stefan-less Enterprise one of a year before. The only other ninety-plus score, Masher’s 93 off 49 balls in the second Weasels fixture in Hendon, saw a remarkable Weeping Madonna incident when the stone statue of fierce old Sir Robert Peel sparked into life at the end of his innings, applauding and shouting “top innings, mate,” thus freaking out the considerable GWLCC Catholic contingent. A few more tons in The Gents’ second decade would be no more than they deserve and someone other than The Commander achieving this ultimate landmark really would show how far The Gents have travelled.

ons galore for the oppo, unlike The Gents, although astonishingly only four of those eight games were lost by The Gents. The top four in the list below, and 16 out of the top 20, are opening batsmen, twice the ratio of the Ashton-dominated Gents list. Mick Walker’s innings was on Mr Snelling’s début. He did bat well, but it was not a vintage Gents fielding display (or perhaps it was) for at one point in his innings Mick began to field return throws by way of kind assistance. Richard Bulmer and Craig Maddocks have their own place in Gent folklore after their chanceless stand of 239.

Jeremy “The Beast of Beckton” Best, affectionately nicknamed Rosy West by his team, has the distinction of being the lowest-batting ton-up merchant in Gents history, going in at No.5 at the Police Academy in 1991. Note also the three Beggar Near Ton Experiences. Doff caps to the elegant left-hander and Gents nemesis Charles Arthur, who has scored three fifties. Steve Bignell, Paul Christensen, Mike Hughes and Clyde Seale have schizophrenically scored fifties for and against The Gents. Absorb the remarkable Innings Domination Factor (final column) of the Cheetahs’ ringer, Mick Walker (twice) and Andy Mayhew, the last-named scoring his unbeaten 58 out of 90 for six.

Salute Steve Bignell, the first player to take a fifty off The Gents. Best knock? Anyone who saw Mayhem’s two 1996 innings would argue for their inclusion, perhaps alongside Geordie Jacques’s systematic piece of destruction. Nobody expected Geordie to do what he did, as he had borrowed two disreputable and bestained Gents’ pads, an old box and one of the sadder bats. Older Gents may point to the Waddell, Bulmer and Best projects. It’s all healthy speculation and perhaps the diplomatic answer is to proffer equal congratulations to one and all of the players who have achieved their personal batting landmark, though how Charlie Arthur spunked his way to 70 in 1995 is beyond this writer.
